Damaged Stability Calculations

Naval Architecture

Ship stability is a complicated aspect of naval architecture which has existed in some form or another for hundreds of years.  Intact stability calculations are relatively straightforward and involve taking all the centers of mass of objects on the vessel and the center of buoyancy of the hull. Cargo arrangements and loadings, crane operations, and the design sea states are usually taken into account.  Damaged stability calculations are much more complicated than intact stability.  The areas and volumes can quickly become tedious and long to compute.

Damaged stability calculations, and the creation of file formats to support those calculations can be provided upon request. Please contact DONJON-SMIT for cost information.  Using this service will compliment our other services such as OPA-90 coverage and salvage response.

We respond 24/7. We have the experts and the specialized equipment for almost any marine emergency.

Voyage Repairs

Transiting outbound on the Columbia River near Cathlamet, Washington, the 623-foot Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier ran aground. The Vessel Response Plan was executed and DONJON-SMIT immediately mobilized salvage personnel and assets to the scene.

However, upon refloating the vessel retained trim by the head and heel to port as the result of flooding of the Forepeak (FPT) and the number 1 Port Water Ballast Tank (1WBT-P). Preliminary surveys performed at the anchorage revealed multiple holes within the FPT, as well as significant upset in way of the ship’s port hull. The port side damage was punctuated by a 25-foot by 5-foot wide fracture at the turn of the bilge. Both the FPT and 1WBT-P had significant quantities of rock ruble; moreover, 1WBT-P had a large boulder lodged within a Deep Web Frame a few millimeters beneath the Hold.

The vessel successfully transited to the lay berth at Kalama, approximately 5- NM east of Longview, Washington. Due to a lack of capability and facilities on the Columbia River to offload and safely stow the wheat cargo in a time and cost effective manner, voyage repairs whilst the vessel was waterborne were necessitated.
